Searching for the perfect burgers? The national pop culture digital publication Pop Sugar, which has over 32 million fans and followers, has declared burgers by Chubbfathers in Alabaster, the absolute best in Alabama.
Following Pop Sugar’s recommendation, last Saturday, my wife Kathy and I traveled 20 miles from Birmingham’s Southside to experience Chubbfather’s “Zydeco” and “Pit Stop” burgers. We were not disappointed.
The burgers were spectacular.
But perhaps, more importantly, we discovered an inspirational restaurant that is giving back to their community.
Chubbfathers has food trucks too
After ordering and promptly devouring our burgers and tater tots, Shad Ross, a partner at Chubbfathers came over to give us some background info about this special place.
First off, Chubbfathers is run by Stephanie and William Cholewinski. It is literally a mom and pop operation, according to Shad, who has been best friends with William for 35 years.
Along with their Alabaster location, Chubbfathers has two food trucks, that can be found around Birmingham, Trussville and Leeds (visit their Facebook page to see where they are stationed daily). Last November, they opened their 2nd restaurant in Clanton.
Pop Sugar Recognition
Shad was humble about the Pop Sugar recognition.
“It is an incredible honor. A lot of it comes from our fans. They are very supportive. It is a great honor to be recogized as the best of anything.”
Feed the People
After our brief converastion with Shad, William joined us at our booth. Instead of talking about the burgers, he wanted to tell us about Chubbfathers’ Feed the People project. He passionately described how it works.
At anytime, customers who bring two non-perishable items, will get a drink on the house from the restaurant. Chubbfathers, will then match that donation (example: if a customer brings in 2 cans of tuna fish, Chubbfathers will purchase 2 additional cans) and send it all to a local food pantry in the community. The restaurant usually sends their items to the Thompson Food Bank at the high school.
“Here is our goal,” explained William. “If 250 restaurants throughout the United States, do what we do – if they all donated 25,000 meals a year apiece, we could feed a million people 3 times a day 365 days a year, at no expense to the federal government! And that’s the way it is suppose to be. It is our job to take care of each other. I believe real true change starts in your own backyard.”
Not only has Chubbfathers supported the local food bank, they have raised monies and traveled to places in the Southeast that have experieced natural disasters. In the past two years, they have fed families rebuilding their communities in Lee County near Auburn and Panama City after Hurricane Michael.
Special burgers and place
Before we left, Chubbfathers, William sang us his little ditty about the place.
We also noticed, even though its was near closing time at 8:00pm, the place was filled with families, multiple generations – from grandparents to young children.
When Kathy and I left the restaurant to travel back north to Birmingham, two words summed up the food (especially the burgers) and the folks who work at Chubbfathers:
Generous and family.
We loved the food, people and experience.
