BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham woman’s new job at UAB led her to the doctor who would eventually save her from cancer.
For six years, Valerie Powell had a lump on her jaw. When she started working in UAB’s Radiation Oncology Department, a doctor in that department helped her solve her long-term problem.
Powell says she never knew what the lump was, but the doctor recommended she have it removed. They later discovered it was malignant.
Powell said her doctors working in her same department made a huge difference in her treatment.
“My own co-workers treated me each and every day. My office is pretty close – it’s on the same hallway as the treatment machines. So it was really easy for them to just call me and say, ‘We have a spot open, we’re ready for you,'” Powell said. “So I could just walk out, put my gown on, walk in the room, it took about maybe 30 minutes a day, walk back in and finish the rest of my day working and keep moving.”
The research Powell did in her position gave her a better understanding of her problem. She says it’s why she asked the doctor about her condition.
